Individuals who endured sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have voiced fresh optimism after their first encounter with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, heading the anti-abuse organization, stated that the pontiff's choice to engage with them so early in his papacy spoke volumes about his commitment to addressing the problem.

Worldwide Strict Approach Pushed

The group is advocating for a worldwide zero-tolerance policy that would permanently remove any priest who admits to or is proven of abusing a minor. This approach has been implemented in the US.

The Pope recognized that there is "opposition in certain regions of the world" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is resistance," Hickey stated.

Legacy Challenge

The current pontiff, who took the role in spring, has taken on this longstanding problem that has haunted the Church for many years.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an historic meeting on paedophilia within the Church and changes to church laws to clearly outlaw abuse.

Deeply Felt Link

For the representative, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the measure is personal. The Canadian activist shared they were abused by a clergy member who was subsequently transferred between different parishes.

"We trust this will set the tone for his papacy, because we aim to work with him," they stated. "We have the same goal, we want to eliminate clergy abuse."

Historic Meeting

Multiple members of the organization, which includes victims and advocates from more than 30 nations, engaged with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The discussion, initially planned for a brief period, extended to a sixty minutes, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The Pope was described as "very understanding" when hearing the story of a woman victimized at a Catholic residential school for native youth in North America.

Hickey added the Pope was "tender" about their own story and appeared "very humble, funny, and approachable."

"Victims have consistently sought a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," Hickey stated. "I felt like he was genuine, realistic, and very open and keen to work with us."

Church Regulations Reforms

The group is hoping that changes to church regulations will enable the adoption of the strict approach worldwide.

They have spoken with specialists and gathered documents that they plan to submit to Pope Leo.

"He appeared engaged in looking at it," they noted.

Accountability Highlighted

A recent Vatican-commissioned report highlighted the "importance of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or dismissal of religious officials or personnel in cases of abuse or negligence."

The report also pointed out that victims repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for bishops and senior officials to be made responsible for inaction and cover-up."

Path Ahead

Hickey shared they informed the Pope at the start of their meeting: "This is as much a risk for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

After the meeting, they voiced hope for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, coming together and establishing a relationship and continuing to strengthen that bond is a step in the right direction," Hickey commented.

Hickey concluded that they told with the pontiff: "Even though it's a difficult period, I believe like we can change how the story concludes - he appreciated that."
